On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, Dr Mark Bowden, PhD, PT from the MUSC Department of Health Science and Research presented at our RRTC Quarterly Grand Rounds. The presentation took place on the MUSC campus in the College of Health Professions Complex. The title of the presentation, Locomotor Recovery after Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: Balancing Innovation and Expectation, included the objectives below:
1) Differentiate compensatory versus recovery-based approaches to locomotor rehabilitation
2) Describe components to successful walking rehabilitation programs
3) Understand the factors by which specific motor control deficits may be targeted in future interventions
In his presentation, Dr Bowden discussed the current state of locomotor rehabilitation, including current compensation strategies. He emphasized recovery based approaches and guidelines for maximizing recovery and independence in patients. Dr Bowden also discussed the role of sensory feedback, strength and power capacity, and cardiorespiratory fitness in treatment practice.
Forty four attendees came to the presentation, which included physical therapists, occupational therapists, students, PhD researchers, and recreational therapists. All attendees were eligible to receive one hour of CME credit.
The next SCI Quarterly Grand Rounds will take place in April at MUSC.
