RRTC Shepherd Trauma Center Conference

The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia hosted the second trauma center conference on Saturday, February 26, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. There were 80 registrants and the information was very well received by the participatory audience. Participants included physicians, nurses, occupational therapists and physical therapists.

This conference is part of the series of trauma center half day workshops that MUSC and Shepherd are hosting for the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Secondary Conditions in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury (RRTC) grant. Each event is titled “Translating Evidence to Prevent Secondary Complications after Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)” with the overall purpose of the workshop to train area clinicians and researchers on the secondary conditions related to SCI and provide education to reduce secondary complications and increase longevity after SCI.

Each workshop consists of three presentations by Dr. David Apple, MD, Dr. Deborah Backus, PhD, PT, and Joycelyn Craig, RN, BSN, CRRN all from the Shepherd Center.

After this conference ended, the presenters from the Shepherd Center have identified several additional training products to provide to trauma centers and will be sending those materials out over the next few months in order to continue education and dissemination of information.

The next conference is scheduled for March 26 in Columbia at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital.
