Our three summer students have been working diligently thus far! They have all chosen research topics and titles for their individual research project and have begun the literature reviews for this. They are also working on learning end- note in order to help with their bibliography and references. Each day, the two undergraduate students attend MUSC sponsored presentations on topics such as translational research, human subjects research, and ethics. They can also attend specialty neurologically focused presentations on spinal cord injury, neurologic injuries, and rehabilitation. All students have been participating in team activities including data entry and analysis and learning the steps of our research process.
Allysan Scatterday, a rising senior at the College of Charleston is going to do her research project on "In-home exercise program produces functional outcomes in individuals with incomplete SCI." Leah Snipe, a rising sophmore at Wofford College chose "The Incidence of Myocardial Infarction, Hypertension, and Diabetes as Comorbid Conditions in Person with SCI" for her research.
Our graduate student, Jamar Booth, is going to be doing his research on "Occupational Interests after Spinal Cord Injury." He has revised and narrowed his topic and began the literature review for his research. During his time at MUSC, he has also been working on finding contact information for historically black colleges and universities in the south. We will use this contact information to disseminate our research findings to interested departments within the colleges and universities. Jamar has also met with our data collection coordinator to learn the specifics of data collection and data entry. He has assisted in data entry for a few of our studies.
Our two undergraduate students will have the opportunity to present their research project findings at the end of July to the MUSC Office of Graduate Studies. Our graduate student is looking into opportunities to travel to national conferences with our collaborators at SCSU for a presentation.
